My name is Fariba. Knitting is my passion since I was a little kid.

  • Tutorial 1 – how to cast on
The first step of knitting is casting on. Casting on means making the base row of loops that will allow us to make a knit fabric by connecting new loops in following rows. The number of loops that you need to cast on depends on the project you wanna work on and also on your yarn size.  As you… Read more: Tutorial 1 – how to cast on
  • Stockinette stitch
The very simple fabric that is made of basic knit and purl stitches is called stockinette stitch. It means after you cast on number of stitches, you knit the first row with Knit stitch and knit the second row (return row) with Purl stitch. You repeat to do Knit stitch for all odd rows, like row… Read more: Stockinette stitch

Two-Color Sprouted Seed Stitch Knitting in the Round

Hi, Fariba here from WatchKnitting! Today, we’re exploring the Two-Color Sprouted Seed Stitch, originally created by Vee Knits. One of my lovely followers requested a demonstration of this pattern, which closely resembles the Heart Stitch I recently shared—almost like tiny seeds sprouting across your fabric.

I’ll cover both in-the-round and flat knitting in separate tutorials for easier navigation. This tutorial focuses on knitting in the round, as it’s the more straightforward method. In the next tutorial, I’ll demonstrate how to knit it flat.

Materials Needed:

  • Needles: 16” (40 cm) 4.5 mm circular needle
  • Yarn: Two different colors of worsted weight yarn
    • Main Color (MC): Forms the base fabric
    • Contrast Color (CC): Creates the seed-like details
  • Optional: Stitch marker for tracking rounds

Pattern Overview:

  • Worked in multiples of 2 stitches
  • 8-round repeat
  • Color changes every two rounds
    • Rounds 2 & 3: Contrast Color
    • Rounds 4 & 5: Main Color
    • Rounds 6 & 7: Contrast Color (offset pattern)
    • Rounds 8 & 1: Main Color (knit rounds)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Setup

Cast on 72 stitches using the Main Color. Work two rounds of rib stitch before starting the pattern. For this demonstration, I have already completed two pattern repeats and will now work another full 8-round repeat.

Round 1 (MC):

Knit all stitches across the round.

Tip: This round sets the foundation for the stitch pattern. While knitting, remember that the Main Color rounds are always knit stitches.

Round 2 (CC):

Switch to the Contrast Color.

  • Repeat: Knit 1, Slip 1 across the round.
  • Keep the yarn in the back when slipping stitches.

Round 3 (CC):

  • Repeat: Purl 1, Slip 1 across the round.
  • When slipping, keep the yarn in the back, then bring it forward to purl.

Round 4 (MC):

Switch back to the Main Color and knit all stitches across the round.

Round 5 (MC):

Knit all stitches across the round.

Round 6 (CC – Offset Pattern):

Switch to the Contrast Color.

  • Repeat: Slip 1, Knit 1 across the round.
  • Slip the stitches that were previously part of the seed pattern—this ensures alignment.

Round 7 (CC):

  • Repeat: Slip 1, Purl 1 across the round.

Round 8 (MC):

Switch back to the Main Color and knit all stitches across the round.

This completes one full repeat of the Two-Color Sprouted Seed Stitch in the round! Simply continue repeating these 8 rounds for the desired length.

Final Thoughts

I hope this tutorial has helped my followers solve the puzzle of this beautiful stitch! It’s a fantastic textured pattern that works up beautifully in two colors. If you enjoyed this tutorial, please like and share with your knitting friends.

Happy knitting! 🧶✨
