    The first step of knitting is casting on. Casting on means making the base row of loops that will allow us to make a knit fabric by connecting new loops in following rows. Wavy Columns (Vertical Wave Stitch) Knitting Pattern

Hello friends! 🌷
I’m Fariba from Watch Knitting, and today I’m sharing a beautiful stitch called the Vertical Wavy Stitch. This design is a simple 4-row repeat that creates elegant flowing waves across your fabric. It’s perfect for scarves, blankets, sweaters, or any project where you want a touch of texture and movement.

Pattern Details

  • Multiple: Cast on a multiple of 2 + 1 stitches
  • Repeat: 4-row repeat
  • Best for: Scarves, throws, cardigans, decorative knits
  • Techniques used: Knit, Double Wrap Purl (DP), Knit into space

Instructions

Row 1 (WS): edge, rep [K1, DP1], K1, edge
Row 2 (RS): edge, rep [P1, K-into-sp btw P & K], P1, edge
Row 3 (WS): edge, rep [K1, DP1], K1, edge
Row 4 (RS): edge, rep [P1, K-into-sp btw K & P], P1, edge

Repeat these 4 rows for the pattern.

Abbreviations

rep = RepeatTips

K = Knit

P = Purl

DP = Double Wrap Purl (purl stitch wrapped twice around the needle)

K-into-sp = Knit into space (between two stitches as indicated)

RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

✨ Work a rib base (optional) before starting the stitch for easier knitting.
✨ Keep your double-wrap purl stitches loose so the waves form naturally.
✨ Light steam blocking at the end will help the fabric relax and show the vertical waves beautifully.

This stitch is both simple and impressive—the more repeats you knit, the more the waves come to life. Give it a try in your next project, and don’t forget to share your results with me! 💖
