  • Tutorial 1 – how to cast on
The first step of knitting is casting on. Casting on means making the base row of loops that will allow us to make a knit fabric by connecting new loops in following rows. The number of loops that you need to cast on depends on the project you wanna work on and also on your yarn size.  As you… Read more: Tutorial 1 – how to cast on

Easy Beret Tutorial | Reversible Two-Color Brioche Hat Knitting for Beginners

Create a Stylish Two-Color Brioche Beret: Beginners Knitting Tutorial

Welcome, knitters! In my latest tutorial, I’m thrilled to share how to craft a reversible two-color brioche beret that’s perfect for fall. This cozy hat, with its rich texture and polished knob detail, is as fun to make as it is to wear. Whether you’re a brioche beginner or a seasoned pro, this step-by-step guide will help you create a stunning accessory. Let’s dive in!

Why You’ll Love This Beret

  • Reversible Design: Wear it on either side for two stylish looks in one!
  • Fall Vibes: Made with warm, autumnal colors (think reddish-orange with metallic gold flecks).
  • Textured Beauty: Combining aran and DK yarns creates a unique, tactile pattern.
  • Polished Finish: A cute knob on top adds a professional touch.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Yarn:
    • 60g of Red Heart Super Saver Aran Fleck (95% acrylic, weight #4) for the main color.
    • 30g of DK or lightweight #3 yarn in reddish-orange with metallic gold flakes for the contrast color.
  • Needles:
    • 16-inch circular needle, 2.5mm.
    • Additional 2.5mm and 3mm straight needles (or DPNs/circulars, your choice) for cast-on.
  • Tools: Measuring tape, scissors, tapestry needle, stitch marker (or scrap yarn loop), and a plastic bottle cap for the knob.

Tutorial Highlights

  1. Cast-On: Start with 64 stitches in the contrast color and 65 in the main color using a symmetrical brioche cast-on for a seamless edge.
  2. Two-Color Brioche Stitch: Alternate knit and purl rounds, switching colors each round. Use SL1YO (slip one, yarn over) for that signature brioche texture.
  3. Shaping the Beret: Increase after 5 rounds to create the classic “pancake” shape, then decrease to form the crown.
  4. Finishing Touches: Add a stretchy one-color brioche brim and a stockinette knob for a polished look.

Check out the full video tutorial for detailed steps, including tips on avoiding loose stitches and mastering the brioche rib. If you’re new to brioche, I’ve linked additional tutorials below to help you nail the technique!

Pro Tips

  • Keep your cast-on loose to make the first round easier.
  • Use a stitch marker (or scrap yarn) to track rounds, especially for beginners.
  • Adjust the brim at the end for a custom fit—tight or loose, it’s up to you!
  • Experiment with colors to match your style.
